The University of Pittsburgh offers four pathways for students interested in teaching careers. Undergraduate students interested in gaining certification to teach in Pennsylvania public schools can earn the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Teacher Education—which offers licensure pathways in seven different languages. Undergraduate students interested in working with Multilingual Learners can add the Teaching English as an Additional Language (TEAL) minor to any bachelor’s degree at Pitt. Additionally, those interested in gaining a graduate degree plus PK-12 Pennsylvania teaching certification can pursue the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program in World and Heritage Language Education. The MAT is completed in less than one year (summer, Fall and Spring) and includes a year-long internship in public schools. Lastly, students interested in teaching abroad or in non-public school contexts can gain a Master of Education (MED) in World and Heritage Language Education.
